Like most presidents, he had some glaring flaws. But he was a tenacious worker at a trying time in American history, and he was a good steward of the office.

It's complicated, and we've generally had few Presidents I'd call "Great." He was the President we needed at the time, and that's the most "greatness" we can expect since Woodrow Wilson established horrible precedents of executive abuse that we suffer to this day.
