Elementary school students are still developing their skills in English, and it might be too early to add another language to their course work.

Should start between 10&13, this lack reflects our inability to communicate & conduct business with countries in their language. I learned 2 English & German from10 -13.
ReplyAs an all knowing child I was so happy that I did not have to learn a 2nd language-Have been forever sorry that I missed the opportunity of a lifetime to expand my horizons throughout my life.
ReplyLearning a second language early in life helps form the brain for later better learning. I think the US should encourage a second language starting in 1st grade.
ReplyI believe the younger you are the easier it is to learn a different language and on the West Coast we should learn Spanish
ReplyJr High and High School is too late...may as well not have it at all if not in Grade School.
ReplyYes this is the time and it is so easy for them to learn another language
Reply"Required?" I'm not so sure, But if the parents want them too, the younger the better. Children brought up in bi-lingual households easily pick up both languages. It informs the brain. No downside.
ReplySign language at the least should be offered in all public schools.
ReplyThis is when learning another language is easier.
