There is not a lot of land in Johnson County that has not been developed. Exurbs are outside the county now. I feel we are going to need to do more re-zoning and restructuring in order to meet the future housing needs of Johnson County.

We need to make the market profitable for a developer/builder to operate in this arena rather than putting a larger burden on the taxpayer to support rental assistance programs. If the market is there they will come and it will be a longer term solution.

This choice seems to be between the carrot-and-stick options. Financial assistance/incentives to buyers/renters and builders/land lords seems preferable to me if it works. Regulation and zoning should be added if necessary. So BOTH!
ReplyWhilke I love a free market idea, the reality is as a builder its way more profitable to build a $500K house than 2 small houses which have super tight budgets. I think to develop land in areas where we can increase density, the city, county, have to step in to the land acquisition side anyway
