I believe that people visiting the page tells more about its popularity than social shares because a lot of people may read the material without sharing it.

Page views seems like a more objective way to measure because you are including all the people who shun social media..

More people sharing means more people eventually see.
ReplyBecause I feel these days it's a far more powerful way to communicate with people
ReplySocial shares let me know that the content is actually reaching people and they are engaging with it, not just visiting the page.
ReplySocial media shares let me know my work resonated enough with readers/viewers that they felt compelled to share my content with others.
ReplySocial shares let me expand my content offerings and I get to measure the metrics on Facebook precisely. Social media is a much more viable option than just page views because of the versatility and targeted ads.
ReplyIf people are moved enough by your content to share it, I measure its popularity by that action.
ReplyPage views are too arbitrary and include people who may disagree or dislike what they just read. However, only people who actively agree and appreciate the content will decide to share it with others.
ReplyPage views are too easily inflated by users who see the content only for a moment but do not read or interact with it.
ReplyOther people sharing my opinion means it resonated more with them than them simply liking it
ReplyThough page views are a great measurement for the effectiveness of a headline, shares prove the audience enjoyed the content enough to send out to their network, and that the content has the potential to go viral.
