Lawyers should be protecting the innocent, not the guilty. The victims, and their families are currently suffering the effects of a crime over, and over, and over again, while the public pays the financial burden for the criminal.

"If you kill we'll kill you" it's a bit of a deterrent. It's more expensive to leave them in prison their entire lives who pays for that we do.
