The league has had 82-game seasons for so long now, making the season shorter would make seasonal stats incomparable. Scoring titles, for example, would be way different if the season were dropped to 58 games. So would the total career stats of guys just entering the league. The teams would also lose a ton of revenue with the absence of those additional home games.

The regular season is way too long. Many teams are out of the playoff race, if not outright losing on purpose, by the second half of the season. 58 games would be great. The playoffs are the best part of the NBA, and less regular season games would be plenty to sort out the 16 best teams in the league.
