The man was a genocidal rapist. He was the worst sort of war criminal and should not be celebrated. He didn't even discover America. The Vikings beat him to it by over a century.

While Columbus did introduce some parts of the new world to Europeans, he did not discover America. Native Americans beat him to that. He's is responsible for introducing Syphilis to the new world.

But the Natives were already wearing their conquered enemies' skin and making slaves of kidnapped women.
Columbus is credited with finding America. His journey was dangerous, traveling uncharted waters. He was part of his time in history and his views were influenced by that history.
