As an Avid guitar player I can attest there is definitely a difference. Talent can make a cheap guitar sound great, but there is a notable difference in sound and playability. I am very stingy about the neck design.

Tubes play so much better live, but solid state amps are more versatile and fun to play with at home

Tubes just sound better IF you cant crank the volume! With that said, getting repairs done is getting harder and harder.
