The NFL could always use some competition, and combining football with Vince McMahon's WWE-style of play is a winner. Wrestling is immensely popular as it fills arenas all over the country, and McMahon can market a winner. Football players who normally wouldn't have a shot at playing in front of a national audience could get a chance to shine while earning money and playing a sport they love. McMahon learned his lessons from the first iteration of the XFL and should be successful this time because there aren't any gimmicks.

The timing of the announcement is so McMahon can get in good with Donald Trump, a longtime friend of his.
