The Daytona 500 is the Super Bowl of NASCAR. It happens every February, and the winner's purse is enormous. The excitement for the new season is palpable, and the city of Daytona becomes a racer's paradise for an entire week. The qualifying races make the Daytona 500 spectacle more exciting. It gets racers ready, and anyone can come out on top once the checkered flag falls. The races give die-hard fans a chance to see top-level drivers on another day of the week that's not Sunday in a real competition mode.

Having more races than necessary is dangerous. If a top driver crashes out of a qualifying race, he doesn't get into Sunday's field. No one wants to see one of the stars of NASCAR sitting on the sidelines during the biggest race of the year. Crashes and wrecks in qualifying races just add more expenses to the teams and wastes resources. Qualifying should be about speed and putting together the best car, not about racing. The main event is on Sunday, not a few days before.
