North Korea has been an impoverished nation for a long time, and it still thinks it is at war with South Korea. Kim Jong-un can only hold onto power for so long, and even harsher economic sanctions are making life harder in the isolated country. The 2018 Winter Olympics seem to be thawing relations, and Kim might finally recognize that his country needs help rather than a dictator. The United States and South Korea agreed to talk to North Korea after formal meetings in Pyeongchang, but U.S. officials stress that North Korea won't have sanctions removed until it cooperates.

Kim Jong-un has never been trustworthy. Despite an overture of talks coming from the United States and South Korea, Kim may not relinquish his hold on power until he dies. He mistrusts the Americans deeply because he believes the United States caused great harm to his grandfather's grand plan during the communist uprisings of the 1940s and 1950s. There's no way peace works in this case. Only tighter sanctions can solve the problem of a nuclear North Korea.
