Zoos inspire research and create citizens who want to more deeply understand their planet. When kids are exposed to exotic creatures that they can't see anywhere else, it enhances their sense of wonder and their interest in ecology. Perhaps the world's next big scientific discovery begins with a child who sees a beautiful animal in the zoo and then goes on to do research in a particular field because of that experience. Zoos are a wonderful teaching tool for kids.

Zoos are no longer necessary thanks to technology that lets us experience events half a world away as if we were right there. There are live streams of African safaris, webcams of eagles' nests, and a wide range of other videos on YouTube via which kids can observe wild animals in the animals' natural habitat. Zoos can also be dangerous, especially in the event that an animal escapes its cage, such as the jaguar in New Orleans' Audubon Zoo. With so many benefactors and financiers around the world today, scientific research is better done in the field and classroom than in zoos.
